What you're actually paying for

The charger on the wall is only one part of the project. The installation also has to safely support the electrical load and place the equipment where you can use it comfortably every day.

A quote may cover charger equipment, electrical labour, wiring, protective devices, mounting, ESA notification and testing. Ask which of those are included rather than comparing the biggest number on two different offers.

Ontario EV charging price guide

Recent published 2026 Ontario charger guides show a broad range, not a universal price list.

Component General market context The question to ask
Home Level 2 charger Often several hundred dollars or more Is the charger supplied or owner-provided?
Straightforward installation Labour and material costs vary by route Does the price include the entire circuit and testing?
Longer wiring run More cable, labour and finished-surface work What route is included in the estimate?
Service/panel changes May be a separate major cost Has a load calculation shown this is necessary?

The $1,200–$3,000 figure in the quick answer is an external-market planning range, not a price promise. Get a local written estimate for the complete scope and applicable tax.

Five things that push an installation higher

1. Distance from panel to parking spot

A charger mounted near an accessible panel can involve much less work than one across a finished basement or detached garage. Cable length, access and protection all affect the scope.

2. Panel capacity

Some homes have capacity for the intended charger. Others need load management, a lower configured charging rate or a service upgrade.

Don't approve a 200A upgrade before a licensed electrician checks the load. See do you need 200A for an EV charger?.

3. Charger location

Outdoor equipment must be suitable for the conditions. The best location also depends on where the vehicle parks and where its charging port sits.

4. Your choice of equipment

An approved charger with useful scheduling and cable management may cost more up front. But the highest-rated charger isn't automatically the right purchase if your vehicle or house won't benefit from its maximum output.

5. Additional electrical work

Subpanels, repairs to existing circuits, access changes or finished-wall restoration can alter the quote. Ask for those items to be identified rather than buried in a single total.

A sample quote breakdown—without invented job pricing

A useful written quote separates:

  1. Charger make/model and whether hardware is supplied.
  2. Branch circuit, cable route and protection.
  3. Installation labour and testing.
  4. ESA notification/inspection arrangements.
  5. Optional load management or panel work.
  6. Exclusions, tax and any finishing repairs.

This is a scope checklist, not a real customer invoice or an estimate of Great Lakes Electric's rates.

Do you need a charger with the highest amperage?

Not always. If you regularly park at home overnight, a moderate charging rate may cover daily use. Start with your vehicle's charging capability and actual driving rather than paying for maximum power on principle.

A smaller installation may be more economical if the electrical assessment and your charging habits support it.

Ontario compliance still matters

The ESA requires a notification of work for EV charger installation. The work must follow the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, and hired electrical work must be performed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor.

Use equipment with a recognised approval mark, correctly installed for its location.

How to get a useful Sarnia quote

Before contacting Great Lakes Electric, gather:

  • EV make/model and preferred charger (if chosen).
  • A photo of the closed electrical panel.
  • A photo showing where you want the charger.
  • Approximate distance between panel and parking spot.
  • Any planned second EV or major appliances.

Request EV charger installation in Sarnia and ask for a quote that distinguishes the basic installation from optional capacity changes.
