Level 2 home EV charging: what needs to be considered?
A permanently installed Level 2 charger is a popular choice for regular home charging. The right installation starts with a few practical questions:
- Where do you normally park: in a garage, on a driveway or in a shared parking area?
- What make and model of vehicle and charging equipment do you have or plan to buy?
- What charging output do you actually need for your driving routine?
- Is there enough capacity in the existing electrical system for the additional load?
- How far is the charging location from your electrical panel?
Not every home needs a 200-amp service upgrade to add EV charging. An assessment may identify room for a suitable charging circuit, a different charger configuration or a load-management approach, where appropriate.
Our EV charger installation services
Home charger installation
We assess the intended charging location, existing panel, cable route and equipment requirements. Depending on the charger and the installation, the work may involve a dedicated circuit, suitable overcurrent protection, conduit and a hardwired or approved receptacle connection.
Garage and outdoor charging
An indoor garage installation may be relatively direct; a charger on the outside of the house or near a detached garage can involve a longer route and additional protection against weather and damage. Equipment installed outdoors must be approved for that use.
Small-business and workplace charging
For offices, shops and other commercial premises, we can discuss the electrical requirements of employee or customer charging. More complex sites may need additional coordination, load planning or separate equipment suppliers.
Electrical panel and capacity assessments
If you are uncertain whether your property can support a charger, we can start there. Where a panel or service upgrade is genuinely required, we'll explain the reason and scope before proceeding.
How installation works
- Tell us about the vehicle and charger. If you've already bought equipment, send the manufacturer and model. If not, tell us what you need.
- Review the property. We assess service capacity, a suitable location, the wiring route and installation conditions.
- Agree on the electrical scope. The quote reflects the work actually required, including any panel or circuit changes.
- Complete the installation. Electrical work is carried out in line with the applicable Ontario Electrical Safety Code requirements.
- Arrange the required ESA process. EV charger installations in Ontario require an electrical notification of work. Relevant inspection and acceptance documentation should be retained for your records.
Choose a charging system with an appropriate Canadian electrical approval mark. A charger bought online is not necessarily approved for installation in Ontario just because it has the right connector.
How much does EV charger installation cost in Sarnia?
The cost depends much more on the property than on the vehicle badge. Main variables include:
- Distance from the electrical panel to the charger.
- Ease of routing wiring through walls, ceilings or outside.
- Charger electrical requirements and whether the equipment is supplied.
- Existing service capacity and possible load-management or panel work.
- Any outdoor, detached-building or trenching requirements.
We'll discuss these factors when preparing a quote. We don't advertise a one-size-fits-all installation price because it could be misleading.
Before you request a quote
To make the conversation faster, have the charger make/model if available, a photo of the proposed location, and the location of your electrical panel. A photo of the closed panel can help, but never open electrical equipment to gather information for a quote.
If you're planning several electrical upgrades at once, see our electrical installation services or speak with us about combining the work.
Frequently asked questions
Can I install a Level 2 charger with a 100-amp panel?
Possibly. The answer depends on the property's calculated load and installation design, not simply the number on the main breaker. An assessment will determine the sensible options.
Do I need an electrical permit for a home EV charger in Ontario?
Yes. The ESA states that EV charger installations require an electrical notification of work before installation begins. Ask for the relevant acceptance documentation once the work is completed.
Can a charger be installed outside?
Yes, where the equipment is approved for outdoor use and the installation is designed for the location.
Should I buy the charger before contacting an electrician?
You can, but it is often smarter to confirm the intended charging output, electrical capacity and equipment approval first. That reduces the risk of buying unsuitable equipment.
Do you install chargers for different vehicle brands?
The site currently advertises installations compatible with major EV brands. Exact suitability depends on the charger, connector, vehicle and electrical installation, so share your model when enquiring.
