Don't confuse generator price with installed price
The unit sitting on a retailer's website isn't the full project.
A permanent standby system typically involves generator equipment, transfer arrangements, electrical installation, site preparation, a suitable fuel connection, commissioning and applicable notifications.
Some suppliers include particular items in a package; others exclude them. Compare a complete installed scope, not just the unit.
What does “whole-home” really mean?
A system described as whole-home may still rely on a load-management strategy or may have limits when several large appliances operate together.
A household with gas heating can have a very different electrical load from one with electric heat, EV charging or multiple air conditioners.
The best question is: which specific circuits and appliances will function during an outage, including at startup?
Published Ontario price context
Ontario contractors publish different 2026 ranges. Some describe installations around $8,000–$18,000; other quotes for larger whole-home projects rise to $12,000–$25,000 or more.
That disagreement reflects different scopes and geographies. It's also why a single “average price” is misleading.
| Part of the project | Why it can change |
|---|---|
| Generator size and equipment | Required loads and chosen features |
| Transfer equipment | Automatic transfer, selected circuits and compatibility |
| Electrical connections | Panel condition, location and cable route |
| Fuel supply | Natural gas/propane availability and required work |
| Base and positioning | Access, clearances and site conditions |
| Testing and maintenance | Commissioning and ongoing servicing |
Treat the market ranges as planning context only; Sarnia-specific costs require an actual site assessment.
Where can costs be reduced intelligently?
Protect essential loads rather than everything
A system focused on heating controls, refrigeration, sump pump and selected lights may require less equipment than one covering every large appliance. It depends on your household priorities.
Avoid guessing generator size
Oversizing can waste money. Undersizing can make a backup system unreliable for the loads you expect. Ask for a load schedule or sizing explanation.
Resolve siting and fuel early
The closest-looking location may not be acceptable once clearances, access, exhaust, noise, fuel routing and manufacturer requirements are considered.
Compare lifetime costs
A permanent generator requires maintenance and testing. Ask what the service plan includes and what the manufacturer requires to maintain the warranty.
Portable power is a different budget
A portable generator supplying a few independent appliances can have a much lower initial cost. A portable-to-panel connection needs a suitable transfer arrangement installed properly.
Read portable versus standby generators to decide whether automatic backup is worth the extra expenditure.
What a complete quote should specify
- Generator model and proposed capacity.
- List of loads included during an outage.
- Transfer equipment and electrical configuration.
- Fuel connection—who supplies it and what is excluded.
- Concrete pad or other site preparation.
- ESA notification, inspections and testing.
- Start-up demonstration, warranty and servicing.
- Tax, access work and restoration exclusions.
If two suppliers quote radically different totals, get them to compare the same backup loads and scope before choosing the cheaper one.
Safety and Ontario requirements
ESA states that permanently connected standby generators require a transfer device to prevent power feeding back to the utility. Electrical notification is required.
Portable generators must operate outdoors away from doors and windows because of carbon monoxide hazards. They must never be used in a garage, even with doors open.
Plan backup power around your household
For generator installation in Sarnia, tell Great Lakes Electric your top five critical loads, fuel availability and preference for manual or automatic operation.
That makes a quote useful rather than a blind guess based on the floor area of your house.
Frequently asked questions
What does a 20 kW generator cost installed?
Published prices vary considerably. Model selection, actual loads, fuel work and transfer equipment matter more than capacity alone.
Is the gas hookup included?
It may be excluded or subcontracted. Ask for the responsible trade and its cost in writing.
Does a standby system run automatically?
Many do, if designed with an automatic transfer system. The installer should explain operating sequence and supported loads.
Can I install a generator without a transfer switch?
A generator permanently connected to house wiring needs an appropriate transfer device. Backfeeding through an outlet is dangerous.
